October 15, 2019
This is the final extended deadline to file individual tax returns for the year 2018 (Form 1040). The IRS will not accept an electronically filed tax return for the year 2018 after this date. If you’re filing after October 15, you’ll have to mail in your tax return for processing.
This is also the final deadline to fund a SEP-IRA or solo 401(k) for tax year 2018 if you requested an automatic extension of time to file.
What Happens If You Miss a Date?
The IRS says you should file your return ASAP if you miss the deadline. If you owe taxes, pay them as soon as possible. The IRS should still accept your money and your return, but you may be hit with a fine or extra interest charge.
If you owe money and wish to make a payment online, use the IRS Direct Pay. You may also submit your late return online until October 15 with the IRS Free File.
If you are unable to pay the tax that you owe immediately, don’t make the IRS wait. File your return regardless and apply for an installment agreement. The IRS will let you pay over time as long as you make arrangements to do so.
